Kimbra goes sonic with “90s Music”

Secret’s out. Kimbra just released a new genre-mixing song, “90s Music.” Her new album, “The Golden Echo” will be released on Warner Brothers in August.

It’s Kimbra’s first new music since her 2011 debut, “Vows.” Kimbra’s duet with Gotye in the Grammy-winner “Somebody That I Used to Know,” continued to propel her name forward.
About the song, Kimbra says:

“90s Music” embraces so many things I like to explore musically. I am always attracted to the meeting place of light and dark, sweet and sour – the juxtaposition of angular sounds and head-crushing distorted elements sitting alongside a breathy bubblegum vocal. Instead of making the track a throwback musically, I wanted it to feel like a nod to the past from a futurist perspective.”

“90s Music” is futuristic indeed, but bows gracefully to the era of music she reveres and how it shaped her life as a teen. Kimbra accepts that those days are gone, but wants to make clear they’re not meant to be forgotten. She has a soft spot in her heart for famed 90s groups and singer-songwriters like TLC, Mariah Carey, Nirvana and Michael Jackson.

The song is a sonic transport through hip-hop, vocal symmetry and an unrelenting, rapid beat.

Kimbra’s out on an Australian tour with Janelle Monae. More info on Kimbra to come soon.
