Slow and steady still wins the race.
Your Friend’s EP, Jekyll/Hyde, was released in August 2013, but continues to gain steam.
Your Friend is guitarist, vocalist and songwriter Taryn Blake Miller, a former linguistics major from the U of Kansas, who grew up in Winfield.
According to Kansas City’s “The Pitch“, Jekyll/Hyde was recorded in Jordan Geiger’s home in Lawrence, Kansas. Geiger, leader of Hospital Ships, is a mentor to Miller, according to the story.
Miller has been known to grab random people to play with her — neighbors, friends — a steady stream of professional musicians who flesh out her sound. Drummer Nicholas Stahl is just one of her collaborators.
Miller seems to thrive on the unknown. She admits some live shows might not go in her favor, if the chemistry with other performers is not quite right. Miller garners electric energy from playing live, where her heart seems to find rest amid the chaos.
She gained a following after performing at this year’s SXSW and was tapped as one of SPIN’s 5 Best New Artists.
Check out a live performance of Your Friend, filmed for the radio station KJHK at the Kansas University Natural History Museum. A white polar bear and other ghosts keep watch over the performance, not a typical sight for a show, but it further adds to Your Friend’s mysteriousness.
In the video, “Bangs” starts off with a country-guitar tinge and builds in stops and starts, until it eventually sinks into your soul. The echos of the museum add a shimmery haze to “Bangs”. Her stark, quiet guitar notes lead you safely into the depths of each song. Without moving, she’s mesmerizing to watch. Miller’s powerful vocals remain feminine. Her sound is ethereal, but without becoming lost in the clouds. Listening to the concert, you’ll find a strong and astonishing cohesiveness between each song.
Your Friend is one to watch, and one to keep watching.
The majority of her shows are in the West and Midwest, where it all started, but look for that range to expand quickly.
