Flying Lotus’ new track, “Never Catch Me,” from his upcoming album “You’re Dead!” is an intelligent mix of experimental / jazz and hip hop that mixes percussion styles into progressive piano notes. Kendrick Lamar’s rapid-fire vocal onslaught doesn’t hurt either.

Take a listen to “Never Catch Me.”

Steven Ellison, aka Flying Lotus, aka rapper Captain Murphy, is the great-nephew of jazz pianist Alice Coltrane and legendary sax player John Coltrane.

Basically, Flying Lotus is everywhere. Besides his EPs and full-length albums, he’s garnered attention from the avant-garde world with a live scoring of the 1962 film “Heaven and Earth Magic,” and also created a song for the Cartoon Network. He’s collaborated with Erykah Badu on “See Thru To U” and worked with Radiohead’s Thom Yorke.

Besides Lamar, Snoop Dogg and Herbie Hancock also have a hand in “You’re Dead!”
The rapper and producer is also on tour this fall throughout the U.S. Flying Lotus’ fifth album is out Oct. 7 on Warp Records.
