“Too Bright,” the new album from Seattle’s emotionally tormented Mike Hadreas, aka Perfume Genius, is now streaming at NPR and is a sight to behold.
Perfume Genius’ music is singular and dramatic, full of electric synth, glam and gorgeous echo, as well as bare classical strings and piano. Above it all is Hadreas voice, which floats to the top as he tries to come to terms with his personal troubles. Hadreas’ music takes unexpected turns in tempo, even mid-song, which adds to the theatricality.
A splendid NPR review of “Too Bright” accompanies the stream.
“Too Bright” will be released Sept. 23 on Matador Records.
