Foals blow the top off music videos for “Mountain At My Gates”

Have you ever been to the Mugar Omni Theatre in Boston–the one where Leonard Nimoy narrates as you fly over the city of Boston, passing historical buildings and waterways? Foals have done something like that with their new video for “Mountain At My Gates,” but it puts the control squarely in the viewers hands.

Foals have released an interactive, virtual-reality video for the song, the second single off “What Went Down,” out Aug. 28.

The video was directed by Nabil — who’s worked with Kanye West, Arctic Monkeys, Alt-J and Frank Ocean. The video was shot using GoPro equipment — (used in extreme-action photography) — specifically, GoPro’s spherical Virtual Reality technology.

Click on anywhere in the video and turn it at your leisure. Guitarist and vocalist Yannis Philippakis and the rest of the band is there, wherever you look. Suddenly there’s multiples of the same band members in different poses while they play. It’s unsettling in a way but makes you glad there’s technology out there to finally bring videos into the future. Make sure you watch it full-screen too.

In a press release, Nabil says simply:

“We are at the beginning of what we can really do with this technology. It has the power to transport you.”

That’s saying quite a bit, but they seem to have pulled it off. You can look almost anywhere in the video — just stare up at the sky if you want, but don’t be alarmed at the darting birds. It’s all very trippy and energetic and you really should check it out. By the way, it’s a damn good song too.

Philippakis explained how “Mountain At My Gates” evolved during a track-by-track rundown on the new album with NME recently:

“I’d recorded the beginning riff on my phone ages ago. At the beginning it had a baggy feel, but became less so with more work. The central image – ‘I see a mountain at my gates’ was from me getting more interested in seeing what would come out lyrically where there wasn’t a pre-conceived idea. Normally I write voraciously in books and journals, then harvest a lot of that for the record. This, though, came out instantaneously in the room.”

Check out a behind-the-scenes of how they shot “Mountain At My Gates”:

PINS release B-side “Live and Let Go”

Pins-Young Girls vid

Manchester shoegazers and girl band PINS have premiered a B-side, “Live and Let Go,” on Stereogum, and there was really no reason why it should have been left off their new album “Wild Nights” – it’s just as good as the rest of the album. Read our review of “Wild Nights” here.

“Live and Let Go” is the flip side of “Dazed By You,” which will be released as a single Aug. 21 on Bella Union. Dave Catching of Queens of the Stone Age sings backup on “Live and Let Go.”

And if you haven’t seen it, watch the video for their upbeat and carefree single “Young Girls”:

Hear some lovely old-school punk from Royal Headache

The Syndey band Royal Headache has released the single “Another World,” and it runs at a clip appropriate for a drunken celebration in an English pub after work. It’s so fun it’s a damn tough time letting it go for the next song.
The band has punk authenticity like MC5 and melodic vocals like The Jam’s; Listen to “A Town Called Malice” for a quick crash course on blue-collar British rock. Royal Headache stands perfectly in that muddy trench of ’70s -’80s mod/punk/revival.

Check out the catchy, crush-laden title track:

As Pluto comes into view, children’s musician puts deGrasse Tyson’s words to starry magic

P_LORRI_Pluto color

This week, detailed photos of Pluto (everyone’s favorite non-planet planet) will come pouring in via New Horizons on its billions-of-miles trip through space.
Lori Henriques, a children’s jazz pianist, composer and singer, recently read words by astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson about his thoughts on the universe and how everything is connected.

Via Brain Pickings:

“When I look up at the night sky and I know that, yes, we are part of this Universe … the Universe is in us. When I reflect on that fact, I look up — many people feel small, because they’re small, the Universe is big — but I feel big, because my atoms came from those stars.”

Henriques used the jazz melody from “Saint James Infirmary Blues” to romanticize deGrasse Tyson’s words, which seem to be hand-picked for children.

The song, “When I Look Into the Night Sky,” and its resulting video, with silver paper stars and red galaxies, is hauntingly beautiful and bright.

Many thanks to Maria Popova and her site Brain Pickings, which truly does sort out the good from the bad on the vast interwebs.

Listen to Louis Armstrong’s dark “St. James Infirmary” to see just how vast music notes can travel.

You can also download “When I Look Into the Night Sky” with a printable coloring page for free here.

Thanks in advance to Lori Henriques, for providing more good music for my 4-year-old daughter to check out.

Revolutionary new rapper Tunde Olaniran releases single “Namesake”

Afro-futurist rapper Tunde Olaniran’s new single is a wake-up call.

Olaniran, who hails from Flint, Michigan, merges genres on “Namesake” while promoting positive messages of personal identity, leaning into classic dance music notes, then without a breath lays down heavy rap effortlessly.

Vocal sound bites meet hip-hop, which meets melodic singing, which leaks in between rapid-fire raps and ’80s electronic guitar and drum licks. And he’s not all serious either, whipping light-hearted hip-hop lines which are topped with truth bombs.

tunde olaniran

“Everybody’s hoping and scraping and wishing they could be something outside themselves … If I can be me, then you can be yourself,” he repeats without a shred of loftiness, then switches into angry mode, declaring,”It’s like we’re never satisfied.”

Besides his music endeavors, Olaniran also an author, choreographer and activist who works for Planned Parenthood in Michigan. He works as an educator promoting sexual equality and awareness.

Olaniran’s full-length album comes after the success of his 2014 EP “Yung Archetype.”

“Transgressor” will be out Aug. 7 on Quite Scientific.

AC/DC’s “It’s A Long Way To the Top” gets a ghostly remake from Susanna

Norway’s Susanna covers AC/DC’s “It’s A Long Way To the Top,” and she’s stripped that classic rock anthem to the bone.

Susanna’s delicate singing about “one-night stands,” “gettin’ stoned” and “gettin’ beat up” never sounded more isolating and so beautiful. It’s doubtful her version would ever make rock-and-roll-hungry musicians reconsider that roach motel and dive bar, but it’s fantastic to hear AC/DC’s manly music getting stripped bare.

Listen to Susanna’s version on Soundcloud, performed live from Tomba Emmanuelle, taken from a concert with Morten Qzenild and Helge Sten at Emanuel Vigeland Mausoleum in Oslo, Norway. Susanna is part of Susanna and the Magical Orchestra — their 2005 album “Melody Mountain” reinterpreted songs by Leonard Cohen, Sandy Denny, Kiss, Joy Division’s “Love Will Tear Us Apart” and Depeche Mode.

Susanna has also interpreted songs by Dolly Parton, Thin Lizzy and ABBA.

Listen to “Love Will Tear Us Apart,” and just see if you can easily float back to the original without being changed in some way.
