Catch The Buzzcocks on their brief U.S. tour

British punk originators Buzzcocks have announced an eight-date U.S. tour, welcome news for fans.

They kick off Sept. 22 at Vic Theatre in Chicago and wrap up Oct. 1 at Irving Plaza in NYC. Tickets go on sale June 17 but an AmEx presale starts tomorrow (6-14). They’ve already been touring in Europe as part of their 40th (!) anniversary.

For the U.S. dates visit BrooklynVegan.com, while the Buzzcocks‘ site lists their UK/European dates.

Not that you need a refresher, but check out “Something’s Gone Wrong Again” (one of my favorite songs):

TEEN masters the ’80s cable-access TV look for the video ‘Free Time’

You have to admire TEEN for doing things exactly how they want. The Brooklyn-based female quartet has always leaned toward the abstract, warped side of things, mixing space rock with indie-pop and ’70s psychedelic ephemera. No one makes music quite like TEEN, and they go all in, right down to their new video for “Free Time,” below.

The purple-hazy video features dancer Becca Kauffman from Ava Luna, and who also directs the video, which was shot straight to VHS (!) by Mika Altskan at Rollgate Studio in Bushwick, Brooklyn.

According to Kauffman:

‘Free Time’” was inspired by the 1980’s public access television performances of R. Stevie Moore, the post-punk choreographer Michael Clark’s videodance collaborations with his musical contemporaries, and the barebones production quality and interpretive dance accompaniment to Sid Harvey Fisher’s Astrology Songs.

Listen to “Free Time,” “All About Us” and “Tokyo” on Soundcloud:

“Free Time” is off their new album Love Yes, out now on Carpark Records. They’ve kicked off their North American tour and will perform at SXSW on March 16-20.

Stranger Cat becomes the hunted in video for “Red”

Stranger Cat Red

Brooklyn artist Stranger Cat (Cat Martino) has released a Twin Peaks-themed video for her new song “Red.”

The storybook video, which is nothing short of creepy, tells the story of a woman who’s just out for a bike ride when she gets a flat tire. She decides to get help at a random house. Bad choice. At the house, a magician (Schneider) regales her with colorful ribbons and fancy tricks. After she puts on a bejeweled red ring, she wakes up in a grassy field, basically imprisoned and brainwashed by the magician. She’s about to be burned while tied to a tree, but breaks free, tosses the ring in the lake and dives below the water.

Martino’s voice, which ranges from seemingly calm to angry and disturbed, lends an unearthly quality to the electro-pop song.

The video features actor Charles Schneider (who appeared in the movies Ghost World, Tombstone and Beetlejuice) and was directed and edited by Martino.

On her Facebook page today, Martino wrote: “XXXTRA points 4 whoever can figure out which scene caused me to be hospitalized 4 poison ivy.”

Stranger Cat’s debut album In the Wilderness is out now on Joyful Noise. She’s out on tour now with Chad Valley.

Check out an unreleased Garbage song, “Subhuman Supersize Mix”

On Oct. 2, the 20th anniversary edition of Garbage’s self-titled debut album will be out — it includes all remixes and previously unreleased tracks from the rock band’s hugely popular album.
One of those unreleased songs is the blissfully long and grunge-y “Subhuman Supersize Mix,” which of course features Shirley Manson’s vocals — she can morph her voice from a growl to a pretty soar to a drugged-up cokehead. No one does it quite like her.

“Garbage” was originally released Aug. 15, 1995, and included the songs “Stupid Girl” and “Only Happy When It Rains.”

While we’re in a new generation of music, and 1995 is in NO WAY like 2015, the band’s mix of electronic, grunge and rock sounds still resonates.

Check out the audio of “Subhuman Supersize Mix”:

From Manson:

This is a very special occasion for all of us in garbage. We are particularly excited about the upcoming tour - the intent of which is pretty much the celebration of a 20 year long affair between us and those who have loved us.

You can buy the CD and digital configurations starting Oct. 2. A double-vinyl LP will be available Oct. 30 in Europe.

Hear the Odesza/Little Dragon collaboration “Light”

Odesza today released a new single, “Light,” on which Swedish electronic band Little Dragon is featured. “Light” is part of a deluxe edition of “In Return,” coming Sept. 18 on Counter Records.

There’s a backstory to how Little Dragon and Odesza joined forces on “Light.” Little Dragon had sought out Odesza for a remix a song from their album “Nabuma Rubberband.” According to a press release, Little Dragon’s label sent Odesza the stems for a different song, which was not on the album. The idea sat for months, until Odesza and Little Dragon co-headlined a show in Boston. They got together then to build a new Odesza song around the Little Dragon vocal stem.

Listen to “Light” below. The two bands sound perfect together, like they should have collaborated a long time ago. Yukimi Nagano’s sensual R&B vocals intertwine and flows with Odesza’s trademark swaying melodies.

The deluxe edition of “In Return” will have live versions of “Bloom,” IPlayYouListen,” and “Say My Name” (which features Zyra), plus instrumental versions of each song on “In Return.”  A limited 10-inch vinyl will be out Nov. 1.

Girl Band’s debut “Holding Hands With Jamie” out Sept. 25

Irish post-punk outfit Girl Band just finished recording their debut in April, fresh off their U.S. tour — seven tracks were laid down in less than two days.

girl_band_holding_hands_with_jamieThe band has wasted no time: “Holding Hands With Jamie” will be out in September.

Girl Band recently made waves with their creepy video and cover of Blawan’s “Why They Hide Their Bodies Under My Garage,” and the band’s following has quickly grown.

The band’s album teaser is a pretty good indicator of the intensity they can reach and what we can expect from the new album.

Girl Band’s debut is out Sept. 25 on Rough Trade– they set out on another U.S. tour in November and December.

The group put out a message on their website yesterday:

The album was recorded in Dublin in Bowlane Studios and features 9 tracks -all previously unrecorded. We had a lot of fun doing this and can’t wait to share it with everyone.

It will be released on the 25th Sept through Rough Trade Records. There will be a ltd first edition pressing on yellow vinyl available only in Indie record stores and the Rough Trade Webstore. the first 250 online pre-orders will receive a ltd edition hand stamped photobook of us recording the record.

Also very happy to announce a number of new dates in France, Belfast and our first trip to Russia.
